PresentERs – From “Have to Read” to “Want to Read”: A New Attempt Toward Autonomous Extensive Reading
October 26, 2025 @ 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

We will have a short talk about Extensive Reading from Mami Yoshida and Tomoko Kasamaki on Sunday 26 October 19:00-20:00. The event will involve a short 20-30 minute casual talk from our PresentER, followed by around 20-30 minutes of questions and discussion. PresentERs takes place on the last Sunday of each month online on Zoom. It is free for anyone to attend.
Abstract:
The PresentERs will share how the extensive reading program at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies was redesigned. The old program, which relied on e-books and strict targets, often left students unmotivated. To encourage more autonomy and enjoyment, they introduced paper books and new ways of assessing progress. The presentERs will discuss what changed for both students and teachers, and how shifting the focus from “have to read” to “want to read” can make extensive reading more engaging and sustainable.
