Basic English communication between students, and between teachers and students, in many of our schools, colleges and universities has an extremely poor rate of success. Certainly at the end of a student’s high school education there is about a 78% failure rate. This has serious implications for those students who go on to further education.
The main aim of this presentation is to address some of the problems of English Communication in our schools and to assist and motivate those students who are in higher education institutions.
Motivating and engaging students in positive, meaningful ways is an ongoing, and never ending, problem. The presenter will involve the participants in a variety of methodologies/activities and teaching styles which will seek to address the issues outlined above. We will be engaged in listening, reading, writing and speaking activities covering an age range of about 8 to 88 years. It will be a strictly low-tech presentation, with the exception of a sound system. The presenter will also attempt to debunk the notion that learning English is an academic exercise, rather it should be regarded as a pleasant, engaging and fun activity. After all one of our basic aims as teachers should be to have students come into the class expecting a ‘good time’ and leaving knowing they did have a ‘good time.’
現在、短大や大学を含む日本の学校において、学習者同士、もしくは学習者対指導者の英語での基礎的なコミュニケーションが成立するとは言い難い状況にあります。具体的な数字を挙げると、高等学校終了時に、78%が厳しいと答えています。これは、高等教育機関で学ぶ学習者たちにとっては深刻な問題です。
この講演は、学校における英語でのコミュニケーション問題に着目し、高等教育機関で学ぶ学習者たちをサポートし、向上させることを目的としています。
学習者のモチベーションを上げ、向上させる、というのは、現在進行形であり、終わりなき課題です。
今回、この課題を解決すべくさまざまな方法論、教授法、アクティビティーを講演で取りあげます。それらは、8歳から88歳までの学習者を対象とし、リスニング、リーディング、ライティング、スピーキングの四技能を包括したもので、サウンドシステム以外の機器は用いないというアナログなものです。そして、英語学習というのは、楽しく愉快なものであるよりも学問的訓練であるべきだ、という従来の観念を覆してみせましょう。なによりも大切なのは、学習者たちが、授業を楽しみにすること、そして、有意義な時間を過ごせたと満足して教室を後にすることなのですから。
