Title: Beyond Participation: Prioritizing Student Engagement in Young Learnersโ€™ Classrooms
Abstract: Many young learner classrooms rely on participation as the main sign of student involvement. Yet true engagement goes beyond simply answering questions or completing tasks. Young learners flourish when social, as well as emotional, cognitive, and behavioral engagement, are nurtured and valued. This presentation shares practical strategies for fostering meaningful interaction and real-world connections, both inside and beyond the classroom. Examples include global project-based learning, an art-exchange project, and skills-integrated activities that spark collaboration among classmates. Attendees will gain ideas to create richer learning experiences where students are deeply engaged.
Bio: Mari Nakamura is the founder of MELEP, a professional development community for English teachers, with over 30 years of experience teaching young learners.
