Abstractアブストラクト: The Teachers’ Tempered Communication Toolkit, designed by the presenter, supports participants’ effective communication skills that boost learner engagement and facilitate organizational change, specifically for faculty across primary to tertiary contexts in Japan. The toolkit is simple and easy to leverage change, allowing teachers to keep their jobs without making waves. The tempered change framework is adapted from four strategies: disruptive self-expression, verbal jujitsu, variable-term opportunism (picking low-hanging fruit), and strategic alliance-building (Meyerson 2001; 2008). The tempered communication toolkit works well for teachers with limited agency or resources because the strategies fostered advocacy for students, faculty, and administrators through creative brainstorming, learner input, and learning from failures that lead to innovation. The seemingly impossible becomes possible for educators seeking positive change. In the toolkit, the presenter will also suggest minor adjustments to classroom communication that can help students avoid misunderstandings in pragmatic English use and improve their communication skills, leading to successful outcomes.

Bio: Stacey Vye is a professor and director of the Center for English Education and Development at Saitama University, and has been teaching there at various capacities since 2008. She earned her doctoral degree (EdD) in Organizational Change and Leadership from the University of Southern California (USC) and her MA in TESOL from Teachers College, Columbia. She’s passionate about creatively solving problems to promote self-efficacy, goal achievements, and learner and teacher autonomy. Her bio is lengthy because she has lived in Japan for a time and has previously taught at Meikai University, the International University of Health and Welfare, and Sakushin Gakuin University, all in the Kanto area.
