Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place on October 26th at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine’s Inamori Memorial Hall (Shimogamo Campus) from 14:00 with a keynote presentation by Bruno Vannieu.
The AGM is an opportunity to learn about what the Kyoto Chapter of JALT has been doing in 2025 and what we will be doing in 2026 to support your professional development. You can also meet your 2025-2026 officers and learn how you can get involved our efforts.

9 Practical Tips for Teaching Oral Communication Classes in Japan

Getting Japanese students to speak in class can be challenging. One reason is that certain aspects of Japanese culture are magnified in the language classroom, where they can hinder communication and learning. In this workshop, I will share nine practical, classroom-tested strategies that acknowledge and work with those cultural realities, based on 25 years of teaching experience in Japan.
I will show how simple, down-to-earth procedures can help build momentum and foster a positive classroom dynamicโregardless of class size, academic level, or studentsโ initial motivation. While our focus will be on oral communication, some of the techniques can be adapted to other types of language classes as well.
My goal is to offer clarity and encouragement to teachers just beginning their careers in Japanese high schools or universities, and to offer fresh perspectives for more experienced educators. I hope to save you some of the trial and error I facedโand help you create more active, talkative, and engaged classrooms.

Bruno Vannieu has been teaching French at the university level in Japan for over 25 years. He spent eleven of those years at Kobe University, where he was honored with the Best Teacher Award six times. In addition to his work in the classroom, he is actively involved in teacher training and is the author of the forthcoming Getting Your Students to Speak in the Japanese Classroom. He has also co-authored numerous textbooks for learners of French and English. His research centers on intercultural communication and language teaching methodologies.
