JALT is an academic organization made up of educators who aim to improve language education in Japan. Its objectives are to provide educators with a place to exchange information on language education expertise and teaching methods, and to contribute to the new development of language education. The Association was established in August 1975 and was certified as a non-profit organization in September 1999. It is currently the largest language education association in Asia, with approximately 3,000 members, including those from overseas.

JALT traditionally holds its Annual International Conference on Language Teaching and Learning & Educational Materials Exhibition in Autumn, and is one of the largest international conferences on language education, occupying an important position worldwide. A diverse program is planned, including lectures, research presentations, demonstrations, panel discussions, workshops, colloquia, and poster sessions, and many participants from various countries attend every year. In addition, at the materials exhibition, about 55 domestic and international language teaching material publishers exhibited the latest materials with actual demonstrations, and the exhibition was well attended not only by teachers but also by students.

JALT publishes The Language Teacher, a bimonthly magazine, and the JALT Journal, which is published twice a year. The Language Teacher features a variety of articles ranging from theoretical issues to practical teaching methods, as well as book reviews and information on branch meetings and events, while the JALT Journal features academic papers on theories and practices related to language teaching and learning, intercultural issues, etc.

JALT is recognized domestically as a registered member of the Science Council of Japan and sends representatives to the Councilโs Section I Research Liaison Committee (Linguistics and Literature). Since 2008, our association has also served as a managing member of the Union of Associations for Language Studies (UALS). Furthermore, we are affiliated with TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) in the United States and IATEFL (International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language) in the United Kingdom, as well as with major English language teaching associations in Korea, Thailand, Cambodia, Taiwan, Russia, and the Philippines.
