Event report: English Language Teaching for Japanese Engineers

In what felt like the first in person presentation in far far too long, Nagano JALT hosted Sean Collin Mehmet for his presentation on his (largely completed) PhD research.
Sean’s research asksed the question: “To what extent does the TOEIC measure intercultural competence?”. Sean introduced the measurement he used for intercultural competence – the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) – a series of questions that can determine the extent of someone’s cultural awareness. Analyzing a range of student’s TOEIC scores and cross correlating it with the DMIS, Sean’s research did not produce any significant findings or relationship between a higher TOEIC score and higher levels of cultural awareness.
Sean’s research is still ongoing, and in the future he hopes to further his analysis with working engineers instead of students.
After Sean’s presentation the attendees moved to lunch at Asian Station. Thank you all for attending and stay tuned for information on our next My Share event!
