Rakugo: Japanese Sit-Down Comedy
Performer: Kanariya Eiraku
Join us for a Rakugo performance in English on Sunday, 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm, Room 1101
Rakugo can be best described as Japanese sit-down comedy of comic storytelling. Just as there is stand up comedy in Western countries, there is sit-down comedy in Japan. The performer sits on his knees and wears traditional, formal Japanese clothes. He is usually equipped with a fan (sensu), and hand towel (tengui). These items help the performer express and act out the story. In Rakugo, only the conversations between characters appear in the story. Therefore, the performer must be able to play the role of each distinct character. In most cases, the characters have strong stereotypical personalities so that, as the performer switches from one character to another, the audience readily detects the change.
Not Rocket Science: A Teacher Ed Networking Fair
Sunday, 6:15 pm – 8:00 pm, Room 1002
Who’ll be there? People with answers to all your questions! The Teacher Education & Development SIG invites everyone who is interested in learning more about post-graduate and professional development opportunities in TEFL to come to a unique social/networking event. Featuring wine, cheese, and a chance to meet informally with graduates and representatives from a wide variety of Certificate and MA programs based in Japan and overseas, this innovative fair is open to all. Brochures and formal program information will be available, too. Join us and enjoy the conversation!
Graduate Student Showcase
The JALT Graduate Student Showcase (GSS) is in its 4th exciting year and is bigger and better than ever! This year more than 40 masters and doctoral level students from nine graduate school programs will have the opportunity to present their cutting edge research in this unique forum. The presenters represent graduate programs from Aston University, Birmingham University, Kansai University, Kobe University of Foreign Studies, Macquarie University, Meikai University, Meisei University, Teachers College Columbia, and Temple University, Japan. The GSS has become a vital part of JALT outreach to the teaching community by encouraging the participation of highly talented and motivated educator/researchers who in many cases have never had the opportunity to attend a JALT conference before. If you want to catch a glimpse of some of the best and brightest researchers in today’s teacher training programs, be sure to visit the Graduate Student Showcase.
All Graduate Student Showcase events are being held in Room 1201.
