Toby Curtis: Designing English for Veterinary Students: ESP in Action
This presentation explores the design and teaching of English for veterinary students, highlighting how English for Specific Purposes (ESP) can be effectively integrated into a professional curriculum. I will share insights from developing a veterinary English syllabus, including needs analysis, lesson design, and practical classroom activities that build reading, listening, and communication skills. Attendees will gain ideas for applying ESP principles to their own specialized language teaching contexts.

These strategies are adaptable for various proficiency levels and diverse teaching contexts.

Toby Curtis is a lecturer at Okayama University of Science (Imabari Campus) who has taught in Japan for over 20 years. Originally from the United States, he specializes in English language education and also teaches Spanish and humanities courses. In his free time, he enjoys chess and badminton.
トビー・カーティスは、岡山理科大学今治キャンパスに所属する講師で、日本で20年以上の教育経験を有する。アメリカ出身で、英語教育を中心に、スペイン語や人文系科目の教育にも携わっている。趣味はチェスとバドミントンである。

Nathan Crocker – Adjunct Lecturer at Matsuyama University and Okayama University of Science (Imabari Campus).
I’ve always been an avid reader, so the idea of extensive reading really appeals to me. I earned an undergraduate degree in English Literature and Classical Studies, and a Masters in Creative Writing. I’ve been living in Japan for the past 15 years and teaching English at university level for the past five years.
