Presentation 1: Navigating the Latest Horizons in English Education Reform: From Elementary to High School
This presentation explores strategies for developing the five key skillareasโlistening, reading, speaking (interaction), speaking (production),and writingโaligned with the goals of fostering proactive, interactive,and deep learning. It introduces practical approaches to engaging learners by incorporating the principles of Task-Based Language Teaching(TBLT) and leveraging Information and Communication Technology (ICT) across elementary, junior high, and high schools in Japan. A focal pointof the presentation demonstrates how students can utilize ICT devices individually to create original, purpose-driven outcomes. These tasks are tailored to align with the purposes, scenes, and situations where communication occurs, fostering genuine interaction. Time permitting,the session will also feature a brief classroom video to showcase these practices in action.

Dr. Sho Kobayashi, an associate professor in Osaka Kyoiku Universityโs Faculty of Education, specializes in English language education andtechnology. With 20 years of teaching experience across junior/seniorhigh schools and universities, he focuses on teacher training and research to improve English learning through ICT and international exchange programs.
Presentation 2: Internationalization of Higher Education in Japan
The internationalization of higher education has been an important focus since the 1980s, with various forms emerging over the years, including internationalization at home, abroad, and more recently, at a distance. This presentation examines the evolving strategies and challenges involved in internationalizing curricula within the Japanese higher education context. It explores the growing use of English-medium education and the integration of intercultural learning opportunities through pedagogical approaches like Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL). Importantly, this presentation highlights the recent trend of leveraging virtual exchange to facilitate internationalization at home/at a distance.ย
Dr. Mahboubeh Rakhshandehroo is an assistant professor at Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts. Her research interests center around the dynamic intersection of international education and intercultural communication, with a focus on English-medium education, global Englishes, and collaborative online international learning (COIL).ย
