BIO
Christopher Zuelke (Tophe) holds an M.A. and B.S. in Applied Linguistics (TESOL) from the University of Wisconsin โ River Falls. His academic focuses included language acquisition theories, educational psychology, and language assessment and evaluation.
He currently serves as a Visiting Adjunct Professor and Teacher Trainer at the English Language Education Council of Japan (ELEC), where he designs and delivers MEXT-backed curriculum and programs, professional development workshops, and teacher training courses diversified in current curriculum and assessment initiatives.
Within the Japanese Association for Language Teaching, Tophe:
– has been a member since 2023,
– has been serving as President of the Testing and Evaluation SIG (TEVAL) since 2025, and
– has been interim serving as the Publicity Officer of TEVAL since early 2025.

STATEMENT OF INTENT
Through my service as President of the Testing and Evaluation SIG within JALT, I have gained firsthand insight into the local responsibilities, challenges, and long-term vision required to support an organization. This experience has inspired me to contribute to JALT on a broader scale.
As President, I intend to strengthen internal organizational accessibility across SIGs and Chapters by helping the Board of Directors and other leaders reduce silos and increase institutional support throughout JALT. Specific initiatives I would pursue include:
1) developing shared resource repositories so expertise and services across SIGs and Chapters are more visible;
2) establishing dedicated collaboration spaces, both locally and nationally, to facilitate access to this visibility; and
3) refining feedback channels and procedures to ensure that member and leader input further impacts institutional decision-making.
JALT is a leading voice in language education, and I am committed to supporting our members and leaders in sustaining our mission.

STATEMENT OF INTENT
As a long-time member of Fukuoka JALT, I have benefitted greatly from attending and presenting at local chapter meetings, CALL SIG conferences, PanSIG conferences, and international JALT conferences across Japan. Through these experiences, I have had the opportunity to meet and collaborate with many dedicated members of the JALT community and to learn from the diverse perspectives that make our organization strong. These connections have been one of the most rewarding aspects of my involvement in JALT.
I have had the privilege of serving on the JALT Board of Directors for eight years in several roles, including Director of Treasury, Vice President, and Auditor. Through this experience, I have gained a strong understanding of how JALT operates and have had the opportunity to collaborate with many dedicated volunteers who work behind the scenes to support our members and events.
As President, I would like to use this experience to support the continued development and sustainability of JALT. I believe that maintaining a strong, transparent, and collaborative organization is essential for serving our members and supporting language educators across Japan. Together, I hope we can continue to strengthen our community and build a positive path forward for the future of JALT.

After working as a counselor in Southern California for several years, Kenn decided it was time to move on and see the world. He packed up and headed to Central and South America, where he spent a number of years teaching and traveling. In 2009, he received an offer to work for the Thai ministry of education, where he helped open many schools in their EP department. Consulting and opening schools through Southeast Asia for several years finally led him to Japan. After arriving in Japan in 2012 to manage a successful International school on a two year contract, he immediately fell in love with the country, its culture and his coworkers. Since arriving, he has opened 6 new schools in central Japan with expansion ongoing. With a staff of over 150 teachers and administrators, he specializes in administration, logistics and HR. Kenn is passionate about JALT and what it offers its members. He hopes his experience will help lead the company into the future.

I am honored to accept the nomination for the position of Vice President of JALT. Having been an active member of this organization for many years, I deeply appreciate the important role JALT plays in supporting educators, fostering professional development, and strengthening the language teaching community throughout Japan.

For Director of Program: Joseph Vitta
BIO
Joseph P. (Joe) Vitta holds a doctorate from Queen’s University Belfast and is currently a tenured Associate Professor at Waseda University in Tokyo. He has been involved in ELT/L2 practice since 2004 and has been an active ELT/SLA researcher since 2012. His research has appeared in leading journals in the field, and he currently serves on several editorial boards of international journals, including System, Journal of Asia TEFL, and Language Learning & Technology.
His experience with the Japan Association for Language Teaching (JALT), of which he has been a member since 2020, includes serving as Publications Chair for the Vocabulary SIG, and he currently serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the SIGโs journal, Vocabulary Learning and Instruction (VLI). His JALT service also includes helping to organize the Vocabulary SIGโs annual symposium (including booking guest speakers) since 2021. In addition, he and his colleagues have worked to have VLI indexed in major databases and hosted by an international publisher. Joe has also served as an ad hoc reviewer for JALT events when requested.

Since arriving in Japan in 2019, I have worked to develop as a practitionerโresearcher while actively contributing to the professional community surrounding JALT. Through my teaching, research, editorial work, and conference service, I believe I have reached a stage where my experience and academic/professional profile align well with the responsibilities of Director of Program.
JALT plays a uniquely important role in supporting classroom teachers while also providing an accessible entry point (and beyond) into scholarly engagement. My career has consistently bridged these two domains. As an active SLA researcher and journal editor, I have developed a strong understanding of research quality and academic dissemination. At the same time, my teaching and program coordination experience have kept me closely connected to the practical needs of instructors working in diverse contexts. This dual perspective informs my vision for program development that is both rigorous and inclusive.

STATEMENT OF INTENT
From supporting up-and-coming educators through the Student Peer Interaction Network, to helping chapter and SIG events run smoothly, and bringing people together each month for Zoom for Professional Development, my time as Director of Program has been deeply rewarding. Over the past three years, I have made meaningful progress developing and codifying the role, and I feel there is still exciting work ahead. I am not ready to pass the baton just yet, and would be truly honoured to serve another term. My goal is to complete the redevelopment of the role, lay the groundwork for my eventual successor, and continue to support the hard-working program chairs who organize events that highlight the wonderful and diverse community of language educators we call JALT.

Hosam Elmetaher is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Childhood Education at Nagoya Aoi University. He holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from Hiroshima University and a masterโs degree in Curriculum Studies from the University of Hawaii. His research focuses on vocabulary acquisition and assessment, language testing, and English language teaching methodologies.
He has over two decades of experience teaching English in higher education across Japan, Thailand, and Egypt, with a strong background in curriculum design, academic program coordination, and teacher development. He regularly presents at national and international conferences and collaborates with educators and researchers across Asia and beyond. He is currently involved in competitively funded research projects.
A JALT member since 2018, Hosam is committed to supporting inclusive, well-organized academic events that connect research, classroom practice, and professional development for teachers at all stages of their careers.

STATEMENT OF INTENT
JALT conferences should be welcoming, engaging, and rewarding for everyone who attends. If elected as Director of Conference, my focus will be on creating conferences where members feel connected, supported, and motivatedโboth academically and professionally.
I want to encourage meaningful interaction not only between presenters and attendees, but also among attendees themselves. In particular, I aim to support communication across all educational stages, from kindergarten and primary education to secondary and university teaching, by helping participants connect based on shared interests, professional backgrounds, and goals.
I will also encourage opportunities for teacher recruitment by helping educators connect with a range of employers during conferences. In addition, I will work with sponsors and partners to provide promotions, benefits, and added value for attendees, while ensuring that sponsors also have a positive and worthwhile experience.
By working closely with conference chairs, SIGs, chapters, and JALT Central Office, and by paying attention to small but important details, I will support smooth, well-organized conferences that leave a positive and lasting impression. My goal is to ensure that JALT conferences are inclusive, enjoyable, and genuinely rewarding for all members.

STATEMENT OF INTENT
Since joining JALT in 2019, I have been grateful for opportunities to grow professionally while building connections with educators across Japan and beyond. This year marks my second year as Conference Manager, a role both demanding and rewarding. I am running for Director of Conference to continue supporting JALT at the international conference level. Working closely with the current Director of Conference, Wayne Malcolm, and the team has deepened my understanding of the care, coordination, and collaboration required to bring a conference together. Through this experience, I have gained insight into the many interconnected elements that make the conferences possible.
If elected, I hope to organize conferences that reflect the diversity and energy of language teaching and learning by creating space for all to be involved. I have three main goals: (1) expanding access and participation by welcoming educators from a wider range of institutions, regions, and career stages; (2) working with JALT committees and SIGs and encouraging first-time chapter presenters; and (3) strengthening connections between JALT and institutions across Japan. It would be an honor to continue supporting this work and developing the JALT international conferences as a space where educators can connect, share, and learn from one another.

I have learned a lot over the past few years as Director of Public Relations, and I’d like to apply these skills as Director of Membership to increase awareness of the value of JALT membership. Mariana Oana Senda is a lecturer of English at several universities in Japan, including Tokyo University of Science, Meiji University, and Aoyama Gakuin University. She has more than twenty years of experience teaching English in diverse educational contexts and has also taught science and medical subjects to international students. Her teaching emphasizes communication, collaboration, and the well-being of both students and teachers.
She is currently pursuing a PhD in Applied Linguistics (TESOL) and Neuro-Education at the University of Leicester (UK). Her research explores how social interaction, empathy, and neuroscience-informed approaches can support language learning and professional development in educational communities.
Within JALT, Mariana actively contributes to several initiatives. She serves as Publicity Chair for the College and University Educators (CUE) SIG and Treasurer for the Lifelong Language Learning (LLL) SIG. She is also involved in the Tokyo Chapter as Programs Chair and contributes to publicity coordination for JALTโs Zoom for Professional Development (ZPD) sessions.

If elected as Director of Public Relations, I would work to strengthen communication, visibility, and connection across JALT. Our organization offers many valuable activities through chapters, SIGs, and dedicated volunteers, and effective communication helps ensure that members and officers can fully benefit from these opportunities.
I believe that strong professional communities are built not only through events and publications, but also through meaningful relationships among educators. Supporting clear and accessible communication can help connect members, encourage collaboration, and make it easier for both new and experienced educators to engage with JALTโs initiatives.
My goal would be to highlight the work of chapters and SIGs, promote professional development opportunities, and support collaboration across the organization. After graduating from the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, with a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Management Economics in Industry & Finance) in 1992, I worked for 12 years in the finance industry in Toronto, Canada, first as an internal controls auditor at Citibank Canada and later as a financial analyst and project manager at RBC Dominion Securities and Toronto Dominion Securities. Since arriving in Japan in 2005 I have worked in various areas of the English language education sector. I am presently a lecturer at a number of universities in the Okayama area as well as a Business English instructor for a large chemical engineering company.
After attending local JALT events over a number of years I became a member of the Okayama Chapter in 2013. I then served as Okayama Chapter Treasurer from 2015 to 2024. My involvement in JALT at the national level began in 2019, first as Chapter Treasurer Liaison (2019-2020), then Financial Steering Committee Chair (2021-2024), and since January 2025 I have served as JALTโs Director of Treasury. I was also auditor for the United Associations of Language Studies (UALS) in 2023 and 2024.

STATEMENT OF INTENT
Since becoming Director of Treasury in January 2025, I have focused on supporting chapter treasurers, SIG treasurers, the International Conference team, as well as other areas of JALT. I have also worked on enhancing financial reporting by improving the collection, analysis, and sharing of financial information. This has allowed for more efficient use of JALTโs funds. If re-elected, I shall continue to develop further improvements in these areas.
There are other areas that I would like to prioritize should I be re-elected. The first involves facilitating greater collaboration between the Finance Committee and Program Committee in working to provide more support to smaller chapters and SIGs. This would see the development of a clear framework that helps chapters and SIGs cooperate with one another more easily in organizing their activities.
Another key issue is that of officer support. JALT membership has declined over the last five years, and this has brought increasing challenges in the recruitment and retention of Chapter and SIG officers. I believe the Director of Treasury can play an important role in working with JALTโs Executive Board and committees in identifying ways to attract and support new officers throughout all areas of JALT.

I have been in the language education field for approximately 30 years. While studying at the University of Hawaii, I was working part-time as a student interchanger. Three years after graduating from university, I came to Japan to work as an ALT. After my 3-year contract, I went back to the States, furthered my education (master’s), and gained work experience (through intensive English programs, community colleges, and even managing a school), then came back to Japan to teach at the university level. Received my doctorate in Japan, and I realized that I could do moreโฆ
I joined JALT in 2012 but didnโt actively volunteer until 2022. I needed the time to get accustomed before getting involved. Started as president of the College and University Educators Special Interest Group and then took on many other roles. I have been a conference chairperson for CUE SIG for 3 years, been a vetter for JALT conferences, PanSIG conferences, and CUE SIG conferences, been a proofreader for JALT publications, and was in the Code of Conduct committee. Then, in late 2025, I was elected as the Director of Records. I have now been in this position for a little over 6 months.

My purpose for running for Auditor is that I feel my long experience within JALT particularly as a Director of Treasury, FSC Chair, Treasurer Liaison and long time JALT Hokkaido Officer has given me the knowledge and experience to be able to fulfill the duties of Auditor for NPO JALT. In addition, I would like to continue, if necessary, the “housecleaning” of removing standing rules and by-laws that no longer apply or have been changed — a project that past Auditors and this past BoD seemed to have made a lot of progress.

BIO
Iโm from Rochester, Minnesota (USA). After high school, I was an exchange student for nine months in Argentina, then earned a BA in History from the University of Colorado (1986). After working odd jobs and traveling in the US, Europe, and Asia, I arrived in Osaka in 1991 thinking I would stay and teach for nine months or so. Plans changed, and after teaching several years in Eikaiwa and in Junior and Senior High Schools for Osaka YMCA, I studied in the Summer MA-TESOL program at the School for International Training in Vermont (2000-2001) and shifted to teaching mostly at universities, currently at Kindai, Osaka Jogakuin, Hannan, and Kyoto Gaidai. I also enjoy teaching one morning a week at a local pre-school.
I first joined JALT in 1997 and have served as Osaka Chapter Treasurer (1999-2003), and as one of the longest serving Chapter Presidents in JALT history (Nov 2001 – present). I have served in various roles on the national conference team: as Photographer (2003 – 2005), Security officer, and On-site Accommodations Coordinator (2008). I have also served actively on JALTโs Executive Board on financial committees and other working groups, on the Administrative Committee (2014-2018), and as Chapter Representative Liaison (2017-2019).

STATEMENT OF INTENT
If honored to be elected to serve as Auditor, I will strive to follow in previous Auditorsโ footsteps to ensure that JALT abides by relevant NPO laws and JALTโs Constitution, Bylaws, Standing Rules, and democratic principles. With the support and counsel of members of the Audit Committee and others, I will aim to tap into my varied work and life experiences, including long and varied service in JALT, to provide institutional memory and other relevant knowledge, attitudes, and feedback in support of the President, Vice President, Directors, JCO staff, and Executive Board, all in an effort to cultivate a strong sense of community, fairness, and excellence in JALT.
