The Motion that established the OSC

Motion 2022-1-12: Motion to create the Officer Support Committee (OSC) to help orient new officers and support current officers in JALT’s SIGs, chapters, and committees (Proposed by Bill Pellowe, Director of Public Relations and Grant Osterman, TYL SIG Coordinator and SRL)

The Officer Support Committee shall

create and maintain a protocol for notifying new officers about existing JALT resources for officers;
create and maintain an introductory FAQ for new officers;
maintain and update the JALT Officer Resources on jalt.org;
keep the various JALT officer manuals up to date;
support officers through periodic orientation and training sessions online.
hold an orientation and training session for incoming, current and potential officers during the Annual International JALT Conference and the Annual PanSIG Conference. These sessions may be online, hybrid, or in person.

The Officer Support Committee members shall consist of

the DoPR (Director of Public Relations)
the CRL (Chapter Representative Liaison)
the SRL (SIG Representative Liaison)
the Program Liaison, Program Liaison Assistant, or a current or former Program Chair from a SIG or chapter;
the Treasurer SIG Liaison and / or the Treasurer Chapter Liaison;
the Public Relations Liaison, PR Liaison Assistant, or a current or former Publicity Chair from a SIG or chapter;
the Membership Liaison, Membership Liaison Assistant, or a current or former Membership Chair from a SIG or chapter;
up to three other committee members who are current or former officers.

The Officer Support Committee Chair shall be elected by the committee members from among the committee members.

Rationale:
Currently, JALT officers are by tradition trained by the officers that they replace, but this is an unreliable and inconsistent method. New officers have reported feeling lost, unsure of their responsibilities, and unaware of the resources available to them. This committee will systemize what has been an ad hoc process of orienting new officers. This committee will also help train all officers on new systems; currently, the new JALT website is almost one year old, and JALT has recently adopted BaseCamp for communications, and many officers would benefit from orientation and training on these systems.
