Forming New Chapters and SIGs

Starting a New Chapter

Any group of JALT national members may apply to the JALT Executive Board to be recognized as a Forming Chapter.

A geographical group must submit a Forming Chapter/SIG Petition with at least five signatures of JALT National members in good standing (current members) wishing to be recognized as a Forming Chapter.

A Forming Chapter must designate at least two JALT National members as officers. The designated positions are: President (required), Program Chair, Publicity Chair, Membership Chair, and Treasurer. It is preferable to have the entire slate of officers at the onset.

A Forming Chapter must hold at least three public meetings per year. Forming Chapters do not have Executive Board voting rights, but may participate in Executive Board discussions. Expenses to attend Executive Board Meetings (one representative, winter and summer EBM) are supported by JALT National.

Submit completed Forming Chapter/SIG Petition to the JALT Chapter Representative Liaison (CRL) chaprep@jalt.org or by posting it to the JALT Central Office.

Forming a New Special Interest Group (SIG)

A group with a particular interest in a relevant academic or pedagogical area who wishes to form a new SIG must submit a Forming Chapter/SIG Petition with at least 20 signatures of JALT National members in good standing (current members) wishing to be recognized as a Forming SIG.

A Forming SIG must designate at least two JALT National members as officers. The designated positions are: Coordinator (required), and any of the following positions: Program Chair, Publications Chair, Membership Chair, and Treasurer. It is preferable to have the entire slate of officers at the onset.

A Forming SIG must produce at least one publication per year. (Both electronic or hardcopy versions are acceptable.)
