Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Committee (DEI)

The core mission of the JALT DEI Committee is to promote, celebrate, and welcome all forms of pluralism and diversity in ELT including, but not limited to, gender, race, language, national origin, sexual orientation, physical ability, or teaching context. We aim to achieve this mission through education, communication, outreach, and advocacy within and beyond the JALT organization. The DEI Committee actively works alongside JALT to help improve equity and representation across JALT organizational practices. We strive for DEI as it pertains to the following: – pedagogical practice: finding ways to promote multiculturalism, diversity, and multilingualism among ELT practitioners in Japan, in line with current research trends in TESOL – outreach: increasing the diversity of stakeholders involved in JALT, including event speakers, chapter and Committee members, and increasing the participation of prospective JALT members from underrepresented groups – professional development and support: providing suggestions and advice on how to navigate situations where one may feel marginalized, providing training to those who wish to promote inclusive workplaces – policy: advocating for inclusive and equitable policies within the JALT organization – partnerships: working across JALT committees, working groups, and chapters to promote DEI-related events that focus on shared interests.
