John Campbell-Larsen (Kyoto Women’s University)
Our special speaker from Kyoto, John Campbell-Larsen, will lead 2 talks, giving a lot of tips concerning teaching English conversation. During the first hour, he will address various pragmatic issues, such as discourse markers, backchannels, vague category markers, and reported speech. During the second hour, he will outline three genres of questions: Transactional questions, display questions, and interactional questions. In particular, interactional questions fulfill a primarily social function. The speaker will demonstrate ways in which interactional questions can be taught in the classroom. For details, see the Hiroshima JALT homepage or newsletter. Please note the Saturday 4-6 p.m. meeting time.
