๐Ÿ“š Presentation Session

Title:
When Materials Donโ€™t Fit: Using Formative Assessment to Bridge the Gap

Presenter:
Hazelynn Balway

Session Description:
In many English language classrooms, textbooks and ready-made materials do not always match studentsโ€™ proficiency levels, learning pace, or specific needs. When this happens, students may lose interest or struggle to understand the lesson.

This presentation explores how formative assessment can help teachers notice and respond to these gaps in real time. Drawing on classroom examples from secondary-level EFL settings, the session introduces simple strategies that give teachers immediate insight into what students understandโ€”and where they may need additional support.

Participants will also examine practical ways to collect and interpret formative information, and how to adapt tasks, instructions, pacing, and materials based on what they learn. By viewing formative assessment as an ongoing conversation rather than a final evaluation, teachers can create more flexible and responsive instruction that better supports diverse learners in the English classroom.
