Okayama JALT: Building better social relationships in the classroom, with Any Questions?

October 23, 2021 @ 3:00 PM5:00 PM

Simon Capper, Jim Ronald, Marshall Higa

Lateral thinking puzzles are goal-oriented, problem-solving, communicative activities that offer engaging and entertaining challenges for learners of all levels. Having used these puzzles extensively in class, and – a decade ago – based a textbook around them, we recently had the opportunity to revise the book and introduce an even greater emphasis on communication. The new activities focus on building relationships among students, increasing social communication and enhancing their pragmatic awareness.

In this workshop we’ll demonstrate how to use lateral thinking puzzles in class and will showcase some of the communicative activities that help students improve their social interactions and their communicative skills.
