Ms. Heather McCulloch

Abstract:
Susan Cain in Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking discusses how classrooms are centered around extroverts. There is the idea that speaking is connected to competence. Cain calls this the “extrovert ideal.” Heather McCulloch will show how the introvert could possibly become the new ideal. She will draw on her own experience and research to examine what introversion is and what it is not. She will also discuss why introverts are so overwhelmed in social situations in addition to offering ways to help introverts excel in the language classroom that participants will be able to practice during the workshop. Both introverts and extroverts will be invited to discuss their experiences throughout each group activity.

概要
言語学習において外向的な特性を持った学習者がその中心に置かれがちである、とアメリカのベストセラー作家スーザン・ケイン氏は、その著書「内向型人間の時代：社会を変える静かな人の力」の中で述べています。 話すことと能力の間には関係性があるという認識がありますが、 ケイン氏はこれを “外向型の理想 “と呼んでいます。 その一方で、今回のプレゼンテーションでは、内向的な特性を持った学習がどのようにして新しい理想像になりうるかを示します。講演者 自身の経験と研究をもとに、そもそも内向性とは何かについて検証します。 また、なぜ内向的な人は多くの場面で圧倒されてしまうのか、さらに、内向的な人が語学学習の中で活躍するための方法を、ワークショップ中に参加者の皆さんに実践していただきながら、ご紹介します。 内向的な人も外向的な人も、それぞれのグループ活動の中で自分の経験を話し合ってもらいます。

Heather McCulloch has had considerable experience being a quiet student. Nevertheless, she has embraced her introversion, and accordingly, fostered a desire to help other students and teachers do the same. At present, she is the president of the Gunma JALT chapter, showing that even the most introverted can be leaders.
