Presenter: Ken Ikeda
Abstract: In the manner of a ‘My Share’, he present his long-running interest in raising students’ awareness of their social identities. Rather than claiming expertise, he uses exploratory practice to help develop his and students’ deeper understandings of them selves in learning situations. His current concern is in positionality and he will introduce an activity that has helped spark participants’ acute awareness of their personal and social identities.
Bio: Ken Ikeda is in the Department of English Language and Literature at Otsuma Women’s University in Chiyoda Ward in Tokyo. Ken is an active member in the Learner Development (LD) SIG, primarily serving on the editorial team of LD’s Learning Learning newsletter and the organizing committee of LD conferences. He was born in Los Angeles and came to Japan in 1987 on the JET Program. He enjoys being with his wife and relishing her meals.

Presenter: Jackson Koon Yat Lee
Abstract: This presentation will focus on a lecturer’s approach to introducing and implementing discussions on various topics of diversity into an IELTS-focused academic course. The session will explore approaches to sharing relatable resources such as public data, music, and discussions. It will also examine how the teacher’s personal experiences can contribute to the students’ learning while allowing students to critically and respectfully generate and share ideas. The session will encourage the audience to (re)consider how they can welcome diversity and inclusion topics into the classroom.
Bio: Jackson Koon Yat Lee is a Specially-Appointed Lecturer at Toyo University in Tokyo and a Part-time Lecturer at Keio University. He is a former Chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee as well as a former Gifu Chapter President, and he is the awardee of the 2022 JALT Early Career Excellence Award. His research interests include intercultural communication, diversity in ELT, and the Japanese English education system. He also enjoys sharing information on outstanding ramen shops.
