JALT2019 Poster Design Winners

As with last year, we ran the Best Poster Design Competition at JALT2019. There were 4 scheduled poster session slots – Saturday A, Saturday B, Sunday C, Sunday D. There was one winner for each of the time slots. Winners were awarded a 5,000 yen Amazon voucher to spend however they wish! Thank you to everyone who came along, enjoyed the poster sessions, and voted for the best poster design!

    Dyslexia, ADHD, Autism spectrum disorder & learning difficulties: what do these mean in your mainstream classroom? Many Japanese students have reading and writing impairments, but most will never get the help needed due to social perceptions. Thus, they underachieve. How can you improve your teaching efficacy, to remove barriers to learning? This bilingual poster session will show instantly useful changes to your classroom, materials, and use of technology to increase learner agency. Be the change.

    20-Year Recipe: Materials for Young Learners

    Teaching English to young learners effectively requires various ideas, tools, and powers. Why? These learners are very honest to judge whether teaching contents are interesting or not by showing their passions. This poster shows two decades worth of a private school’s footsteps, illustrating useful practices and theories which are used to make the students active learners in the small school.

    Effective Ways to Use Selfie Videos in EFL Classes

    Taking selfie videos has become a daily habit and a hugely popular mode of creating online content and self-expression by many (Diefenbach & Christoforakos, 2017). The language teacher can leverage the use of this new method of engaging students beyond the classroom. This poster presents successful, classroom-tested ways to meaningfully take advantage of the young generation’s rampant use of selfie videos and turn it into an effective tool for fostering self-directed learning and critical thinking.

    Washback Effects of University Entrance Exams

    Test washback is a complex phenomenon and can be a powerful determiner as to what happens in the language classroom. This research-based poster presentation examines the effects of grammar-based university entrance examinations on teaching pedagogy and student learning behavior in Japanese high schools.
