Growing up on the east coast of the United States, Wayne lived in Cornwall, NY then went to undergraduate school at Syracuse University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. After moving to Washington, DC and living there for five years he decided to make the jump to Japan as an English language teacher for NOVA language school.
Eventually, the gig at NOVA ended and Wayne and his wife decided to open their own school under the name AKTIA. Along with teaching part time at Akita International University, Akita University, and Meitokukan High School Adult Culture School, life was quite busy. During this time he obtained a Master of Management – International from University of Phoenix Online.
In 2012, the decision was made to close up shop in Akita and move to Fukui in order to work full-time at University of Fukui. During this time Wayne was in the middle of a Doctorate of Education program focused on educational leadership with a specialization in curriculum and instruction. In 2018 his degree was successfully completed along with the oral defense of his dissertation study. This focused on study abroad and the value companies placed on study abroad when recruiting globally competent talent.
Since becoming a member in 2008, JALT has played an important role in Wayne’s life in Japan, both professionally and personally. Through JALT Wayne has been able to experience and practice leadership and followership, as well as develop as a teacher, researcher, writer, and presenter. In 2008 he became a member of the Akita Chapter. In time he would become the president of the Akita Chapter, and an active member of the national JALT community. After moving to Fukui he continued being active as a member of the Fukui JALT chapter where he held the position of program chair. From 2019 he took on the position of Fukui-JALT treasurer. He is also active with the Critical Thinking and Study Abroad SIGs.
Through the encouragement of the late Kevin Cleary, Wayne led a small team who drafted the JALT mission statement. He also held the appointed national officer position of Business Manager where he was able to work closely with all facets of the membership community, and in particular the Associate Members. Not resting in exercising his commitment to JALT, Wayne embarked on becoming a member of the Board of Directors.
In 2019 he was appointed Director of Program, and is looking forward to an engaging, challenging and rewarding experience because through JALT he has been able to assist in the professional development of so many excellent educators while being able to forge valuable friendships that will last and define his lifetime.
