Sachi Oshima – Enhancing Oral Presentation Skills for Students with Lower English Proficiency – January 25th 2026

โ€ข

Sachi Oshima is an associate professor at the Faculty of Law, Chuo Gakuin University, Chiba. After working for the Japan Foundation as a chief officer, she has been teaching English at the university level since 2017. Her research interests are related to TESOL and intercultural exchange projects.

This presentation examined whether beginner-level studentsโ€™ difficulties in English performance were solely due to low proficiency or also linked to limited experience in organising ideas. Sachi introduced a structured idea-organisation training approach implemented through a Japanese presentation project with first-year students. By completing multiple presentations and engaging in peer feedback, students improved their ability to organize ideas and increased their self-efficacy in presenting. The session highlighted how these gains in L1 Japanese were expected to transfer to L2 English performance and discussed how the approach could be adapted to different teaching contexts.
