In our continued dedication to TD membership and fellow JALT members, we are excited to offer new grants to support academics in need of funds.
Whether you are looking to participate in a TD SIG Related Conference or are in need of funds to get your research to the next level, the Teacher Development SIG welcomes your application.
Grant descriptions are below. Make sure to read details and stipulations carefully before applying. The application form link is available at the bottom.
With respect and gratitude for all that you do,
The TD SIG Officer Team

e. Must be presenting at the conference or presentation, or be submitting a summary write-up of the conference or presentation to our ETD journal.
f. The money awarded by the SIG as a grant can be used to pay the cost of attending the conference itself, and also for travel to and from the conference venue (within Japan), up to a maximum of 30,000 yen. Please give a detailed outline of estimated costs when applying for the grant.
*Notes:
If an applicant successfully passes the criteria and review for Grant (1), it will subsequently proceed in two stages. The first of which is a “pre-approval” before booking the conference, with the second being a “confirmation of payment for conference/presentation attendance” which is then followed with payment from the TD SIG to the successful applicant.
The applicant must submit a detailed list of expenditure claims related to conference which will be subject to review. The amount of the grant will be up to ¥30,000 but shall be adjusted (lowered) when the respective expenses are lower than that amount.
(2) Small Research Grant
a. Must be a JALT Teacher Development SIG member who is in good standing (membership fees paid for current year up to 6 months following the grant application)
b. Must be over the age of 18 years old and not a high school student or exchange student. If the applicant is a graduate school student, it should be in a field related to education or TESOL.
c. Must not have received or be receiving funds for the related project from other sources such as MEXT or other external grants. Likewise, must not hold any research budget from your institution (work or school).
d. Must submit a research proposal related to EFL education, wherein you outline the research/project. It shall include:
– an abstract
– method of research
– relation of the research to a larger project (if it is a part of a larger project)
– steps of procedure for the larger project (if it is a part of a larger project)
– the anticipated presentation of results (e.g. presentation, research publication)
– how the research will lead to your own development as a teacher in the field of EFL.
e. Concerning the preceding step (d), the applicant should outline how the grant will assist them. This shall include what the grant will be used for – written in an itemized list with detailed descriptions and cost estimates.
f. The money awarded by the SIG as a research grant can be used to pay for necessary materials related to the needs of the project, including but not limited to, the purchase of books, and other materials, or for payments to participants taking part in the study, up to a maximum of 30,000 yen. Please give an outline of estimated costs when applying for the grant.
g. Ethical approval must be received by the researcher from any institutions in which the research takes place. The TD SIG cannot take any liability for any issues arising from failure to adhere to required ethical responsibilities. Proof of ethical approval may be requested by the SIG.
h. In any presentations or publications arising from the use of grant money, please include a small note acknowledging the receipt of the grant from the TD SIG.
i. Additionally, we request that the applicant presents the research (in part or in whole) through one of our TD SIG functions. This can be in the form of a research presentation, research paper for our ETD publication, and/or for a recorded interview online.
Decision-Making Protocol for Vetting Proposals:
Proposal submissions for the Up-and-Coming Research Grants will be reviewed by three officers and/or members-at-large who will make their decisions based on the merit of the respective proposal and availability of grants.
Each grant can be awarded up to twice a fiscal year. Although an applicant can submit their proposal at any time, its review and decision will be made in the 6-month period it was received. The first six-month period is from April 1st to September 30th and the second six-month period is from October 1st to March 31st. Reviews and submission will be ongoing, and in cases where there is a low number of applications the decision may be made early in the period. Once either grant (1) or (2) is awarded for that period, the recipient will be notified by email and notice of grant closure will be made on JALT TD website. For these reasons, it is advised that applicants submit their proposals as early as possible.
A person who has applied and received either grant (1) or (2) within a fiscal year shall not be eligible to apply for either grant for the remainder of that fiscal year. The fiscal year begins April 1st and ends March 31st. In the case of proposal rejection, a short critique and/or reasons for the rejection will be conveyed by email to the applicant. The applicant is free to submit a revised grant proposal during the next application period.
As stipulated in the above Outline, the applicant must be a JALT Teacher Development SIG member who is in good standing (membership fees paid for current year up to 6 months following the grant application).
