Presentation Abstracts

Peter Ross: Invisible Writing

"When students try to revise their writing at the same time as they compose it, they usually end up writing almost nothing. Invisible writing is a way to free students from interfering with their own creative process by temporarily shifting their focus away from self-critique and onto their inner voice and imagery."

Tadashi Ishida: Older Students as both Teachers and Learners

"The presenter will discuss how a social educational organization called PEACE has helped promote international understanding and intercultural communication between Japanese and non-Japanese people through the medium of English. He will also report on PEACE's activities, including demonstrations of
calligraphy, the tea ceremony and how to put on a kimono, as well as musical performances using Japanese musical instruments, and a program that matches up non-Japanese visitors with volunteer tour guides. The presentation will end with a case study illustrating what happened at a festival where international students from Waseda University carried a portable shrine with the help of residents of a downtown Tokyo community."

Andy Boon and Eric Skier: All about the JALT Pan Sig Conference

The 2011 Pan Sig conference will be held at Shinshu University in Matsumoto on May 21st and 22nd next year. Previous conference chair and proceedings editor, Andy Boon and Eric Skier will talk about the background, organisation and people who have been involved in the conference over the past 10 years.
