SUMMARY:Osaka JALT Online - Culture in the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Osaka JALT Online (OJO) is a free webinar series dedicated to bringing together language teaching professionals in Japan and beyond in a friendly\, supportive\, and low-pressure online environment. We welcome both JALT members from the wider JALT community as well as non-members to share presentations about their passions and interests related to language teaching in a friendly\, supportive\, low-stakes environment. Ultimately\, OJO aims to foster professional growth\, expand networking opportunities for presenters and attendees\, and build deeper connections among our community.  \n\n\n\nLanguage as Movement \n\n\n\nThis presentation looks at ways the gestures we make are not separate from\, but potentially part of the language itself. Embodied cognition is an emerging field in linguistics and thus attendees are invited to rethink how their gestures and movements impact their classrooms and whether this could be utilized to help students achieve learning outcomes. \n\n\n\nHeather Gulick is an ESL educator for both businesses and schools with over 10 years of teaching experience in Japan across various levels and ages. She has a Bachelor’s in Linguistics with a minor in Japanese and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Neuroscience and Education.  \n\n\n\nConnecting Global Issues to Our Lives: Teaching Development\, Poverty\, and Gender in Japan \n\n\n\nThis webinar reflects on my attempt to teach development studies and sociology to encourage students to explore global and local issues\, connect these issues to their lives\, find their own questions\, and consider how they might contribute to well-being and social change from where they stand. My experiences in the Philippines and UN development cooperation deepened my understanding of global issues\, while childbirth and parenting in Japan helped me connect those issues to my own life\, showing me how close poverty\, gender inequality\, and isolation can be to anyone’s life. I will share students’ varied responses\, challenges\, and strategies. \n\n\n\nHanayo Hirai\, PhD\, is Professor at Otemon Gakuin University and specializes in development studies from a sociological perspective. Her research connects Japan and the Philippines\, focusing on poverty\, gender\, care\, and inclusion\, especially vulnerable children and families. DESCRIPTION:Call for Abstracts: Teacher Journeys 2026JALT Teacher Development SIG (TD SIG) & JALT Hokkaido \n\n\n\nThe Teacher Development Special Interest Group (TD SIG) & JAlT Hokkaido invites abstract submissions for its annual Teacher Journeys conference\, to be held on Sunday\, August 23rd\, in Hakodate\, Hokkaido.  \n\n\n\nLocation：Hakodate University \n\n\n\nA networking dinner is also planned for the 7pm the evening before\, Saturday\, August 22nd. \n\n\n\nBoth new and experienced presenters are encouraged to submit. Presentation formats will include either 25- or 40-minute sessions\, followed by discussion. \n\n\n\nAbstract submissions are open until Tuesday\, July 21st. Applicants will receive a response within one week of submission. DESCRIPTION:JALT Tochigi proudly hosts Dr James York for a free\, 2-hour workshop and Q&A session.  \n\n\n\nDetails \n\n\n\nAbout the workshop \n         \n In this workshop\, you’ll discover how board and card games work as a fantastic tool in a TBLT approach to boost your students’ speaking skills. James will walk you through his framework and worksheets\, explain the design choices he made\, and offer some real-world tips from his experience using this method for over a decade. Attendees will leave with the ability to emulate all of the framework in their own contexts.\n\nPresenter Bio\n\n James York plays with many things. Games\, taiko\, music\, code\, and pedagogy. One of his proudest gaming moments is defeating Towerfall Ascensions on Legendary difficulty. He’s designed a few small games including a card game for learning Japanese politeness levels. He works at Meiji University\, Tokyo\, where he teaches and researches the intersection of games and play in education. He is the founder of Ludic Language Pedagogy\, and the York Game Lab.

SUMMARY:Critical Thinking in the Classroom 2026
DESCRIPTION:The JALT Critical Thinking SIG invites you to its annual conference at Showa Women’s University in Tokyo\, Critical Thinking in the Classroom 2026 (CTC 2026). At its heart\, CTC 2026 is about bringing together a community of researchers and practitioners to share their findings and experiences related to critical thinking in the language classroom. If you’re interested in encouraging deeper thinking in your classes\, this is where your ideas\, from pedagogical approaches to classroom-ready materials\, belong. \n\n\n\nThirty-three presentations are scheduled on a wide variety of areas of interest that include higher-order thinking\, evaluating sources\, thinking dispositions\, viewpoint taking\, debate and argumentation\, academic writing\, evaluation\, syllabus and program planning\, advising\, gaming\, and of course\, critical thinking.  \n\n\n\nRegistration for the conference is now open. Please use the registration form HERE. Registering will ensure that you have a printed name card for the conference and have the opportunity to join the conference dinner. Walk-up registrations are possible on the day of the conference though. (Deadline: August 28th\, 2026) \n\n\n\nConference fees will be collected in cash at the door. The fees are: JALT member  (1000 yen)\, non-JALT member (2000 yen)\, JALT member student (500 yen)\, and non-JALT member student (1000 yen). \n\n\n\nThe conference will be held in Building 3 on the Showa Women’s University Campus. DESCRIPTION:SpeakerKinsella Valies is a lecturer at Sophia University with an MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Limerick. Her research focuses on filmmaking in language learning\, TTRPGs\, and collaborative research. She is a former The Language Teacher co-editor\, a 2025 JALT invited speaker\, and a JSPS Grants-in-Aid co-investigator.AbstractThis session is designed for language teacher-researchers at all career stages who want concrete\, transferable skills for developing research into publishable writing. While early-career teachers often face challenges in moving from data to manuscript\, mid- and late-career researchers also benefit from refining alignment\, clarity\, and contribution in increasingly complex projects. This session treats research writing as a developmental\, genre-aware\, and socially supported practice\, offering clear “can do” outcomes and practical strategies participants can immediately apply.The 1-hour workshop focuses on core writing competencies across career levels. Participants will learn to align research questions\, methods\, results\, and claims with clarity and precision\, and to articulate meaningful contributions for different audiences and journals. They will also develop the ability to recognize and revise common weaknesses in quantitative and mixed-methods writing\, while applying ethical and transparent uses of generative AI such as structural support\, reader-simulation\, and language-level revision.Through guided analysis of sample excerpts\, participants will identify strengths and gaps in manuscripts and practice revising for coherence and reader engagement.The 30-minute hands-on activity emphasizes practical application and take-home strategies. Participants will map their own research projects onto a clear manuscript structure\, demonstrating that they can organize a paper from introduction to discussion. They will exchange focused peer feedback using reader-oriented prompts\, showing that they can give and apply actionable feedback. They will also design a simple\, ethical AI-supported revision plan tailored to their context\, demonstrating that they can integrate AI responsibly into their writing workflows.Across both components\, the session highlights achievable “can do” goals for each stage of the writing process and provides adaptable tools\, checklists\, and peer feedback techniques. The speaker argues that granting learners autonomy in text selection boosts cognitive engagement and lexical retention. Furthermore\, evidence suggests that students in ER-immersed programs achieve superior collocational competence and academic writing proficiency compared to those in traditional settings\, demonstrating the effectiveness of sustained engagement with diverse\, self-selected texts for long-term language mastery. \n\n\n\nBio:  \n\n\n\nDr. Md Shaiful Islam is an Assistant Professor at Independent University\, Bangladesh (IUB) and Director of the English Language Resource Center. His main research interests are in literature & language teaching and in language contact & change. \n\n\n\nDr Cameron Smith (Aichi Gakuin University)  \n\n\n\nCulture and History CLIL to Support Critical Thinking in the Age of Generative AI \n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, I will describe the approach taken to the latest revision to a presentations-based CLIL textbook series on world culture and history designed for Japanese university students.  \n\n\n\nThe revisions address three issues. First\, improving the choice of unit themes to enable a class of students to produce a sufficient variety of presentations. Second\, the longstanding CLIL challenge of bridging subject matter expertise and language teaching expertise. Third\, the need to strengthen the course’s critical thinking and peer interaction components\, particularly given the advent of generative AI. \n\n\n\nBIO \n\n\n\nCameron Smith received his PhD from Edinburgh University. He teaches in the Department of English Language and Cultures at Aichi Gakuin University. The presentation and discussion will explore the materials\, the creative process\, and the business side of publishing. We hope this event will offer valuable insights for the teaching community and materials creators across various fields. \n\n\n\nAbstract: \n\n\n\nWorking in Japan: Further Explorations\, co-authored by Phoebe Amoroso and John Rucynski\, is the follow-up textbook to the highly successful Working in Japan: Video Interviews with 14 Professionals. The first textbook was a finalist in the Local Innovation category at the 2017 ELTons. The new textbook features video interviews with 14 additional professionals\, from Bulgaria to Indonesia to Peru\, engaged in various careers in Japan\, including content creator\, educator\, guesthouse owner\, import specialist\, and musician.  \n\n\n\nBio:Phoebe Amoroso is a Tokyo-based journalist\, multimedia reporter\, and storyteller. Since moving to Japan in 2014\, she has worked as a business reporter for NHK World and as a correspondent\, covering breaking news for international outlets such as PBS\, CBC\, and Al Jazeera. She has written widely on food\, travel\, business\, and Japanese culture for publications including The Japan Times\, Nikkei Asia\, BBC\, and Lonely Planet. She also produces broadcast features for BBC World Service and has co-authored three editions of Startup Guide\, covering Japan\, Tokyo\, and Nagoya. \n\n\n\nJohn Rucynski is associate professor at Okayama University\, where he teaches a wide range of English language and content-based courses. He has co-authored four textbooks for use in English language courses at the university level in Japan\, including the Surprising Japan! (Shohakusha) and Working in Japan (National Geographic Learning) series. His latest editing project was A Passion for Japan: A Collection of Personal Narratives. This anthology features contributions from several JALT members.

The presenter will first describe a study that examined a link between reading English haiku and empathy. This study found that reflecting upon English haiku over one semester led to a significant increase in the empathy levels of Japanese medical students. Next\, the presenter will introduce activities that aim to increase empathy by making students aware of their own feelings\, the feelings of others\, and how to respond appropriately. SUMMARY:Practical Tips for Teaching Oral Communication Classes in Japan by Bruno Vannieu
DESCRIPTION:SpeakerBruno Vannieu has been teaching French at the university level in Japan for over 25 years\, including eleven years at Kobe University\, where he was honored with the Best Teacher Award on six occasions. His research centers on intercultural communication and language pedagogy. He is the author of Getting Your EFL Students to Speak in Japan and has co-authored numerous French and English language textbooks. \n\n\n\nAbstractGetting Japanese students to speak in class can be challenging. One reason is that certain aspects of Japanese culture are magnified in the language classroom\, where they can hinder communication and learning. In this workshop\, I will share nine practical\, classroom-tested strategies that acknowledge and work with those cultural realities\, based on 25 years of teaching experience in Japan. \n\n\n\nI will show how simple\, down-to-earth procedures can help build momentum and foster a positive classroom dynamic—regardless of class size\, academic level\, or students’ initial motivation. While our focus will be on oral communication\, some of the techniques can be adapted to other types of language classes as well. \n\n\n\nMy goal is to offer clarity and encouragement to teachers just beginning their careers in Japanese high schools or universities\, and to offer fresh perspectives for more experienced educators.
