Made in Hong Kong – The organization of elementary school English in Hong Kong – Can Japan learn from Hong Kong’s experience?

April 21, 2019 @ 1:30 PM4:00 PM

Anthony Robins

Hong Kong may seem very different from Japan, with its British colonial history and its status now as a Special Administrative Region (S.A.R.) of China. Certainly, there are contrasts concerning language teaching, with the aim and need to focus on Cantonese, Mandarin (Putonghua) and English. However, concerning English teaching, there are both similarities and contrasts with Japan, which the speaker will describe. Based on his visits to Hong Kong with students over many years, he will talk about how the Education Department there organizes the English curriculum, particularly at primary (elementary) level, and what Japan can learn from Hong Kong, as it increases English classes at this age.
