Identity as a Motivational Tool: Future-Self Identity, Imagined Communities, and Practical Planning for L2 Learning

Damien Okado-Gough holds an advanced certificate in TEFL (Oxford), and an MSc TESOL, and has over twenty years experience of professional language teaching in Ireland and Japan. He currently teaches English at university level in the Nagoya area across a range of skills and disciplines.
Abstract:
This presentation examines how L2 learner identity can enhance or hinder motivation. It reviews key literature on imagined communities and future-self identity, then engages participants in a practical activity to identify L2 identity factors and redirect them toward personally meaningful, motivating goals.
There will also be short talks by students from Gifu Shotoku Gakuen University.
