Creating Connected Classrooms: Engaging Varied Activities for ESL Learners

April 18 @ 2:00 PM 4:30 PM

This workshop invites instructors to step into the learner’s role and experience a variety of engaging, low‑prep activities designed to strengthen communication, confidence, and connection in the ESL classroom. Rather than a lecture, this is a hands-on session where participants actively try out tasks that integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in meaningful and collaborative ways.

Through these student‑perspective experiences, attendees will gain practical insights into how adaptable, classroom‑tested activities can foster rapport, boost learner motivation, and create opportunities for authentic interaction. Participants will also explore how such routines can be scaled for different proficiency levels and teaching contexts.

The session concludes with an open discussion where instructors can share ideas, compare experiences, and reflect on how these approaches might support their own teaching goals. Educators will leave with a refreshed toolkit of versatile strategies to energize lessons and cultivate a more confident and engaged learning community.

Speaker: Rachel Patterson earned her MBA from the University of Memphis with a minor in Japanese. She has taught in different cities in Japan, an EAP program in the U.S. She currently serves as both administrator and instructor at Kindai Faculty of International Studies Global Studies Program where she specializes in materials creation and teacher development.
