Being a Supportive Colleague: Effectively Reviewing and Editing Manuscripts

July 25 @ 2:00 PM 5:30 PM

In collaboration with the JALT Teacher Development and CUE SIGS, Kobe JALT presents โ€œBeing a Supportive Colleague: Effectively Reviewing and Editing Manuscriptsโ€

The aura of Reviewer 2 is strong among academics, with memes praising the kindness of Reviewer 1 while criticizing the unnecessary harshness of Reviewer 2. However, reviewing does not have to be like this. Writing is an Incredibly personal process for authors and receiving an overly critical or poorly written review can be emotionally destructive to writers. Built on the basic premise of “Give the review you wish to receive”, this workshop will:

-introduce the purpose and process of reviewing
-provide tips and strategies for how to evaluate texts fairly
-show sample rubrics and criteria highlighting consistent elements across the field
-allow participants to evaluate review quality and practice writing good ones
-share resources for effective reviewing

Jennie Roloff Rothman is Senior Coordinator of Teacher Professional Development in the English Language Institute at Kanda University of International Studies. She holds a Masterโ€™s degree in TESOL from Teachers College Columbia University, Tokyo Campus. Her initial foray into education was as a trained writing tutor for two and a half years in the writing center at the George Washington University during her undergraduate studies. She has been teaching in Japan since 2004 and was a manager and tutor of the TC Tokyo Writing Center, so she has extensive experience in providing writing support for peers in the field of language education. Jennie has also run numerous reviewer and vetting training events both within and outside of JALT. Her academic interests include critical thinking and global issues in the language classroom, writing centers, EFL teacher professional development, and reflective practice.
