Speaker Bio:
Since 2010, in her previous position at Tokoha University, Satomi Shibata has been working toward the goal of having all first-year students read 1,000,000 words per year. She also proceeded with the goal of continuing the program for multiple years and reaching YA literature. She has a long history of working for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and in Shizuoka Prefecture with the prefectural board of education, as well as in teaching. She is still teaching a course on English education in elementary schools at Tokoha University Graduate School of Teaching. At the school where she currently works, she is in charge of the kidโs English program, which focuses on how to make learning a habit, increase the amount of learning, and help students acquire a high level of English proficiency. She is working with many students this summer too, on their English learning. In her recent publications, she suggests that using picture books in and out of class will lead to more extensive reading in the future.
