Visualizing Understanding Through Drawing and Poster Making in Multimodal Classroom Assessments

Assessment in language classrooms is often organized into separate tasks that measure skills in isolation, with topics frequently assessed through a single mode, such as writing or speaking. This presentation outlines how Drawing and Poster Making can be integrated into a multimodal assessment design that provides students with multiple ways to demonstrate their understanding of a shared theme. In the Drawing assessment, learners first use writing to clarify their ideas, then transform these ideas into visual representations, using layout, color, and symbolism to make their thinking visible. Poster Making functions as a distinct, collaborative task in which students design posters that blend images and carefully chosen language to communicate a message to an audience. These two visual assessments sit alongside other assessments such as writing, interviews, presentations, journals, and unit tests to form a more balanced system that recognizes varied strengths and preferences. By sharing examples of student work and classroom reflections, this session illustrates how including Drawing and Poster Making in multimodal assessment can support diverse learners, deepen engagement, and provide a more nuanced and authentic picture of students’ understanding.
