This bilingual symposium explores the connection of technology and personal mobility with what we do in language analysis and language teaching. We see increased active research based on corpus studies; students are TV conferencing with overseas students from their classrooms, or studying foreign languages via the Internet; foreign language education is increasingly seen as a medium for learners to express their identity, not merely as acquisition of language as knowledge. The panelists address the impact of these demands and consider how we should respond to them.
The symposium will be conducted in Japanese and English, with presentations being given in one language and summa- rized in the other. We hope that the talks and subsequent discussion will bring us an opportunity to reflect on our research and practice, gaining insights on where we should go from here.
