1. Dues increase

JALT members voted to increase our membership fees, and this takes
effect September 1, 2015.

Regular members will see their annual fees rise from 10,000 to 13,000
yen. This is our first increase since 1998, and will allow JALT to
grow and serve its members in the most effective ways possible.

Membership continues to include subscriptions to our two main print
publications, The Language Teacher and JALT Journal, and free or
discounted participation in all JALT events. At the same time, our
membership structure is changing to respond to changing member needs.
Membership will now include the option to join one chapter, and will
also include the option to join one SIG.

Joint, Group, 5 Year, Senior, Student, and Overseas membership fees,
and additional SIG memberships, will also see about a 30% increase.

The best way to sign up or renew is online at
, but a furikae in the back of the TLT is
also available. Members may renew at any time to extend their term of

JALT Seeking Candidates for Two New Officer Positions

Tue, 06/23/2015 - 1:07pm

As part of our strategic plan for JALT in the future, we have created two new positions for members interested in hands on, creative, and practical work in professional development. These positions require experience, energy, and commitment, but also offer the successful applicants support and autonomy to do great things.

Visit JALT Opportunities to learn more about the Regional Activities Program Chair and Young Learners Subcommittee Chair. These are great ways to work with educators around Japan.

1. Please vote online in the JALT Ordinary General Meeting

JALT Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) Ballots were emailed June 9. The JALT
OGM will be held June 28th in Osaka. This meeting decides important changes
for JALT. We need your vote to establish quorum, but more importantly so
that JALT reflects our members' views and wishes. JALT members can vote
online, and everyone should have received a ballot by email. If you have
not received your ballot, check your spam folder.

Members can also vote at http://jalt.org/2015-1-ogm but you will need to
input your name, and membership information. Your membership number is on
your TLT mailing label.

An important issue on the ballot this time is a proposed membership dues
increase. The Executive Board Meeting approved the increase in February (35
in favor-6 opposed-0 abstentions) but for it to take effect the general
membership needs to ratify it.

3. Nakasendo Conference

Saitama JALT will be co-hosting the 2015 Nakasendo English Conference in
Urawa, on Sunday July 19th along with AJET Block 3 and Saitama City
Educators. The theme is "Change." We would like to see you there. We would
like to hear you. Call for papers closes 1 July 2015.

There are three reasons for Nakasendo to exist:

• Helping teachers gain awareness of what is happening at all levels of
English education, not just their own
• Supporting young teachers’ organizations that have proven dynamic and
innovative in our field
• Improving relations and exchange opportunities between Japanese and
foreign teachers of English

If you feel that these goals support the educational community you wish to
be a part of, we ask for your participation.

If you feel that your completed research, reports, classroom methods or
materials reflect how you have responded to or initiated change, we ask for
you to speak and share.

We are requesting short format presentations, workshops, and poster
presentations, with preference given to first-timers and students. More at
