This 60-page EFL reading text aims to help Japanese students of English think and give opinions about social problems in Japan and overseas. Its 20 chapters cover topics such as fast food, Japanese companies and environmental destruction, illegal foreign workers, video games, women's role in the family, consumer rights, the North-South problem, dishonest doctors, Japan as a super power, and South Africa. Each chapter consists of a 2-page reading, vocabulary notes, a cloze summary of the reading, a scrambled sentence dialogue of opposing opinions and a sentence building exercise. A cassette tape is available separately.
News World 1996: Getting to Know the Changing World

This 100-page advanced reading text comprises timely essays and newspaper articles on current issues, world regions and international affairs. The book consists of twenty 2-3 page readings organized into five sections: the Global Society (globalization, technology & social change), North America (NAFTA, American politics, Canadian separatism, Mexican debt), Asia (ASEAN, China, the two Koreas, earthquakes, trade, Aum Shinrikyo, comfort women in Japan), Europe (the European Community, Britain, Russia, French nuclear weapons, Bosnia) and the Third World (poverty and debt, Vietnam, Singapore, Africa, Israel and the PLO). Each reading includes maps, graphs, charts, photos and Japanese vocabulary, but no exercises. The book also features an introduction (in Japanese) to newspaper English and an appendix which lists common newspaper verbs, sentence patterns and acronyms (e.g. GATT, WHO, PLO).

Washington, WEB Dubois and the NAACP, World Wars I & II, Afro-Americans in music and sport, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and affirmative action. Each chapter contains a 2-page reading, Japanese vocabulary, comprehension questions, listening and translation exercises. A cassette tape is available separately.
