Green Projects for a Green Classroom by Anne Berry and Nina Ito: (continued)

GREEN TEACHING IDEAS

Take the time to photocopy efficiently!
Doing it "right" the first time will save time, labor, and materials later.
  1. Cut-and-paste to fit more onto each page

  2. Reduce text size (but maintain readability)

  3. Put "2 (or even 4) on a page"

  4. Use double-sided copies

  5. Mark your master copies with yellow highlighter so you won't lose them

Use alternatives to photocopies!

  1. Make overhead transparencies (that you'll use again and again)

  2. Use re-usable "class sets" of materials (make photocopies the following day for students who really need them)

  3. Pass around originals of your teaching materials (in plastic sheet protectors)

  4. Use the blackboard more often

Make the classroom "greener"!

  1. Allow students to use scratch paper for their assignments (bring scratch paper from the teachers' office to your class)

  2. Have your students write on both sides of the paper (e.g. for homework and essays)

  3. Bring small boxes (e.g. an empty OHP transparency box) to class to collect any paper that students have to recycle, or set up permanent recycling bins in class

  4. Take a plastic bag to class to collect any aluminum cans students might have

Make the teachers' office "greener"!
Assemble a "green team" and be the leader!

  1. Set up separate recycling bins for: white office paper, colored office paper, mixed paper (e.g. publishers' catalogs), newspaper, and aluminum cans, and then arrange for collection and recycling of the materials

  2. Start a scratch paper pile

  3. Cut scratch paper into 1/4 sheets, staple, and use as a notepad for interoffice memos, or use the inside of used envelopes

  4. Encourage school administrators to buy recycled paper and other environmentally-sound office products

  5. Buy each instructor a ceramic coffee cup as a birthday gift (for office use) to avoid the constant use of throw-away paper cups

  6. Use a central bulletin board to post staff information and messages (instead of making photocopies for each person)

TEACHING PREFIXES TO RAISE ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

Underline the words below that use prefixes.

Many recycling programs have been established in the US in recent
years to prevent waste of irreplaceable resources. Some states have passed
anti-litter laws which make the sale of non-returnable bottles illegal so
that consumers will have a financial incentive to take reusable bottles
back to the store rather than throw them away. Many communities have
recycling centers where people can turn in glass, metal and paper. Some
companies pay ten or fifteen cents a pound for returned aluminum cans.
Recycling reduces litter as well as excessive use of raw materials. In the
same way, more and more home gardeners are using compost piles, in which
vegetable wastes decompose into organic matter.
In spite of these benefits, some people say recycling is
impractical because it takes a lot of time and labor to recycle and
reprocess materials. Although recycling is not unpopular - most people say
that they want to help preserve the environment - it would be an
overstatement to say that they "practice what they preach." Critics claims
that recycling programs have been relatively ineffective, since only a
small percentage of Americans are participating in recycling plans.
  1. Look at the words you underlined. What does each mean?

  2. How does the meaning change if the prefix is removed?

  3. What does each prefix mean?

         ir- _______ un- _______ de- _______
         il- _______ in- _______ en- _______
         im- _______ anti- _______ over- _______

Use the correct prefixes to complete the following sentences.

_______population is an important problem in many developing countries,
but the use of contraceptive devices is ____acceptable to some people because
it is considered by them to be ____moral.

It's ___conceivable to me that throwing away glass bottles is not _____legal
everywhere. The fact that they still use _____-recyclable plastics in
        industry is ____moralizing.

ENVIRONMENTAL BINGO

Talk to the people in the class until you find someone who recycles paper, someone who is a vegetarian, etc. Each time you find someone who answers "Yes!" to your question, write his or her name in the box. The first person to fill in four boxes in a row wins! Good luck!

  Find someone who...

        ...recycles paper
        ...never uses styrofoam
...keeps the house at 65 degrees in the winter
        ...cleans up after a picnic
...takes a cloth bag to the supermarket
        ...donates clothes to the poor
        ...is a vegetarian
        ...recycles bottles
...uses both sides of the paper
        ...recycles cans
        ...uses public transportation
...turns off the water while brushing teeth
        ...recycles plastic whenever possible
...showers in less than 5 minutes
...turns off the lights when leaving the room
        ...never litters
