Date and Time:

Tanja McCandie of Meijo University
Brent Simmonds of Meijo University

JALT’s mission states “JALT promotes excellence in language learning, teaching, and research by providing opportunities for those involved in language education to meet, share, and collaborate.” ( Conferences, chapter meetings and publications are ways that JALT promotes and provide opportunities to its members. However, based on chapter presentations and conference plenary and keynote speaker analysis, there is an imbalance of representation based on gender and ethnicity even when taking into account membership demographics. The presenter will discussion how JALT could adapt to better suit the needs and interests of many of its members. Interviews, round table discussions and surveys used in this research provide information on how JALT could become more inclusive, increase its potential membership and offer better support to part-time, contract teachers and non-tenure teachers. Ideas and feedback from participants is highly encouraged.
