Motivation and Alienation: Resistance as a Natural Part of Language Learning

Hiroshima Chapter

Date and Time:
Sunday, 18 June 2017 - 3:00pm - 5:00pm
Speaker:
Joseph Shaules (Juntendo University)

Learners who struggle with a foreign language often suffer from feelings of alienation and failure, and may be seen as lazy or unmotivated. This presentation will argue, however, that negative reactions to language learning are, in effect, a normal part of the learning process. It will also argue that current models of motivation in SLA don’t fully take this into account. The presentation will help teachers look at motivation in a new light, and will provide tips for reducing learner resistance. Prof. Shaules, coming all the way from Tokyo, is renowned for being an exciting speaker. For details, see recent Hiroshima JALT emails.
