The Power of Connection: How Twitter (and the Internet) Can Make You A Better Teacher

Date and Time:
Sunday, 17 April 2011 - 1:00pm - 3:00pm
Speaker:
Barbara Hoskins Sakamoto (sponsored by Oxford University Press)

For our second full meeting of 2011, we are very happy to welcome - to Nagasaki for the first time - one of the busiest, most popular presenters in Japan. Barbara Hoskins Sakamoto has been an EFL teacher and teacher trainer since 1985She has conducted workshops throughout Asia, the U.S. and Latin America, and is co-author of the best-selling *Let's Go *series (OUP). Her motto is "Always try new things," so these days, when she's not teaching, writing, or giving workshops, you'll often find her online exploring the potential of social media for professional development. If you'd like to explore with her, you can usually find her on her award-winning blog, Teaching Village at http://www.teachingvillage.org/, her wiki at http://teachingvillage.wikispaces.com/ and on Twitter at http://twitter.com/ or Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/barbsaka or in Second Life.

About this presentation: "The Internet allows us to connect with teachers living around the globe, and Twitter is the easiest entry point! How can an English teacher in Greece or Brazil help you be a better English teacher in Japan? Why are online networks so powerful for teachers? We’ll talk about it all - why teachers connect, how they connect, and why you should, too.

"This workshop will be very practical and hands on. If you are comfortable with online networks (like Facebook or Yahoo Groups) you will learn how to make even better use of your Internet resources. If have never used the Internet for professional development, or are nervous about meeting new people online, you will learn how to feel confident (and safe) in cyberspace. We’ll walk through clear, easy steps in setting up an account with Twitter, and in creating your own Personal Learning Network (PLN). We’ll look at examples of ways teachers have used their online networks to learn about new teaching ideas, to find materials for class and to collaborate on projects with other educators. We’ll explore ways that you can use online tools in your own classes, whether or not you have computers or Internet access available. While the activities and examples in this workshop are geared toward teachers of young learners, the tools and resources are will be useful for all teachers.

"You will hopefully leave this workshop eager to meet new teachers around the world, who are already eager to meet you!"

P.S. OUP representative Keiko Willhite, one of our December presenters, will also be there to answer questions and explain sample materials. All welcome!

Cost: members and students, free. One day members: also free this month!

Publishing - Past, Present and Future

Date and Time:
Saturday, 19 February 2011 - 1:00pm - 3:00pm
Speaker:
Steve King, Pearson Education

For our first full meeting of 2011, we are very happy to invite back a popular past presenter. Steve King is the Market Research Manager for Pearson Education in the Asia Pacific and has worked in the field of educational publishing for eight years. He completed a post-graduate Diploma in Publishing Studies in 2008 from the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen and is a frequent speaker on publishing and ELT-related topics on the Asian ELT conference circuit.

In this presentation, he asks: how did educational publishing get to where it is today? What is the current state of educational publishing in terms of where authors, publishers, educators and students stand? How will this look in five, ten or fifteen years from now and what clues do we have today that can shape any predictions we can make about the future?

The presenter will take a short tour through the history of how educational publishing has developed into the multi-billion dollar industry it is today and examine several case studies from the present that make up a snapshot of how this industry will grow and develop in the coming years.

The presenter also looks forward to fielding questions from the participants on any aspect of educational publishing they may have.

Together, we will look at the new online digital resources that will make life easier for the teacher and give students hours of extra practice." The second half of her presentation will focus on Graded Readers and how teachers and schools can start their own Extensive Reading Program. There will be some activities to participate in during the presentation such as answering questions and experiencing some of the activities in the new material.

Next, Kamimura will explain about the Versant English Test, which "automatically evaluates the spoken English skills of non-native English speakers, using speech processing technology and the advanced science of linguistics. The Versant English Test has been used by corporations, call centers/BPOs, government agencies, and academic institutions throughout the world to evaluate the spoken English skills of staff, officers, or students."
