Grammar feedback has long been considered a sine qua non of second language writing instruction, but John Truscott's (1996) controversial article has ignited what has become a long-standing debate over the efficacy of grammar feedback.
Cooperative learning strategies called structures dramatically improve comprehensible input, frequency of language production, and a safe social environment. Participants experience a number of structures. Using RallyRobin students take turns speaking to a partner. Using Timed Pair Share in pairs each student speaks for an allotted time.
Social media sites such as Mixi, Twitter, and Facebook provide a way to extend the language classroom. However, these types of sites also present a number of pitfalls—for both the instructor and students. In particular, privacy issues cause many teachers to be reticent to utilize these platforms.
In the twenty-first century Japanese university level EFL class, there are a number of gaps that emerge between the English teacher and the average Japanese student: age, gender, nationality, and cultural identity. However, with respect to this report, one of the most critical gaps is that of the digital natives, the students, versus digital immigrants, the teacher.
In this talk, Scott Lockman will introduce free web-based tools and a process for using those tools that will allow students and teachers to create and share audio with common smart phone and cell phone technology. Mobile audio recording technology makes it easy for language teachers to prepare original listening materials for self-directed students to download and listen to in their own time.
