The 21st JALT-Gunma Summer Workshop at Kusatsu

The workshop is a two-day event at a seminar house with genuine hot spring up in the mountains. The theme is English Grammar and Politeness. Dr. Leech will give two lectures on the separate topics: 1) How English grammar has been changing; 2) Politeness: is there an East-West divide? There will also be presentations by participants. Tadoku: Extensive Reading in Secondary Schools and Higher Education

Nowadays tadoku, or extensive reading, has become established in many secondary schools and institutions of higher education. Indeed, tadoku has become a kind of rage (!) at some schools and colleges. I will describe how and why Oxford Reading Tree, a reading programme for younger learners, got it all started.

Teaching the Strategies of Speaking

We all use strategies when we speak: to confirm or clarify what we're saying and what we're hearing, to show interest, to maintain and develop conversations, to help with fluency, to compensate for language we don't have. Alastair Graham-Marr, author of Communication Spotlight, a new text that teaches students how to use these strategies, will examine the whys of teaching strategies and look at the sort of strategies he argues should be taught.

Profiles in Motivation: Three Student Graduation Research Projects

Trust Matters

Using ideas from trust theory, this workshop has three main aims: 1) to help teachers gain a deeper understanding of the nature of trust, 2) to help participants analyze specific teaching-learning situations in terms of trust amongst the participants, and 3) to explore ways in which teachers can make changes in their situations by focusing on the notion of trust.
